Singer songwriter Kim Janssen was born in the Netherlands but raised in Asia, spending most of his childhood in Bangkok and Phnom Penh and his teenage years in Kathmandu.
After the premiere for ‘Bottle rockets’ by The Line Of Best Fit (UK) and single ‘Gouldians’, Kim’s new album ‘Cousins’ will be released internationally on March 31st on Snowstar Records.
'Cousins', is a pop album, swinging in tone from dark to blinding technicolor, with glossy synths, huge orchestral arrangements and Kim's vocal - at times a Bill Callahan-esque croon, at times a soaring falsetto. Dark strings and steel swells surround hushed ballads and bursts of maximalist pop, as Kim threads memories of Loi Krathong nights, earthquake drills and political turbulence into a domestic landscape of front yards, birthday parties and chinese restaurants.
Filled with idiosyncrasies, triumphs and tragedies, 'Cousins', is a personal account, about looking back and growing older, about longing and displacement, spiritual doubt, dedication, and obsession. Recorded across two years and several studios, the album features contributions from Marla Hansen (Sufjan Stevens, The National) and Eirikur Orri Olafsson (Sigur Ros) and was mixed by Chris Coady (Beach house, Future Islands) and mastered by Greg Calbi (Blood on the Tracks, Graceland).

Kim Janssen is geboren in Nederland maar opgegroeid in Azië, waar hij het grootste deel van zijn jeugd doorbracht in steden als Bangkok, Phnom Penh en Kathmandu.
Na de primeur van eerste track 'Bottle rockets' op The Line of Best Fit (UK) en single 'Gouldians' wordt op 31 maart 2017 zijn nieuwe album ‘Cousins’ internationaal gereleased op Snowstar Records.
'Cousins' mixt de klassieke en orkestrale arrangementen van Kim's vorige werk met grande pop en Kim’s vocalen – van neuriënd als Bill Callahan tot hoog falsetto. Strijkers en blazers omringen rustige ballades en uitbarstingen van maximalistische pop, terwijl Kim herinneringen van nachten en politieke onrust verbindt met een huiselijk beeld van voortuinen en verjaardagsfeesten. Gevuld met overwinningen en tragediën is ‘Cousins’ een persoonlijk verhaal, over terugkijken en ouder worden, over verlangen en vervreemding, spirituele twijfels, toewijding en obsessie.
Het album, opgenomen over drie jaar en in verschillende studio’s, bevat bijdragen van Marla Hansen (Sufjan Stevens, The National) en Eirikur Orri Olafsson (Sigur Ros), is gemixt door Chris Coady (Beach House, Future Islands) en gemasterd door Creg Calbi (Blood on the Tracks, Graceland).
Kim Janssen stond dit jaar op Eurosonic/Noorderslag, waar hij voor het eerst nummers van ‘Cousins’ speelde met volledige 11-koppige band, inclusief blazers en strijkers. Pers was zeer positief:
