Stereophonics brengt op 1 oktober het langverwachte zesde studioalbum Pull The Pin uit, de eerste release van het drietal in twee jaar. Op het album, geheel geschreven door voorman Kelly Jones, laat de band het allerbeste uit tien jaar Stereophonics samenkomen. Pull The Pin is geproduceerd door Kelly Jones en Jim Lowe (Foo Fighters, Manic Street Preachers) en gemixed door Spike Stent, die eerder samenwerkte met o.a. U2, Depeche Mode en Massive Attack.
Tussen 1997 en 2005 bracht Stereophonics – zanger/gitarist Kelly Jones, bassist Richard Jones en drummer Javier Weyler - vijf albums uit (Word Gets Around, Performance & Cocktails, Just Enough Education To Perform, You Gotta Go There To Come Back en LanguageSexViolenceOther?), scoorden ze meerdere hits, verkocht miljoenen albums en tourden talloze malen de wereld rond. Na een adempauze in 2006 (waarin de liveplaat Live From Dakota en diverse DVD's verschenen) ging
Stereophonics eind van dat jaar de studio in Ierland in. Kelly Jones vertelt: "We did ten songs in ten days. In the past I'd try so hard to make something right, hone in on every detail, but this time I didn't feel precious or force anything. It just came out naturally." Richard Jones voegt toe: "When you have been in a band so long, you tend to know what the next step is going to be before it happens. We trust each other, we’re all on the same page. We all just went in and played, and it was like going with the flow."
Na een introsample van nieuwsberichten trapt Stereophonics Pull The Pin knallend af met Soldiers Make Good Targets om onverminderd door te stomen met Pass The Buck en Bank Holiday Monday. Tussen de gitaren door neemt de band gas terug met karakteristieke Stereophonics-nummers als Daisy Lane, Stone en het volledig akoestische Bright Red Star. "I wanted to say something on this record, to start making story songs again – but with everything I've learnt in the past ten years. It was not to make a political comment, but just to observe what was going on around me in working class, real environments," aldus Kelly.
Van Pull The Pin verschijnt 24 september de eerste single It Means Nothing. Het is een nummer geïnspireerd door de terroristische aanslagen in Londen en het is met name een nummer dat de les verwoordt die Kelly hieruit trok: "You take people for granted every day until something goes wrong. Funerals might be the only time you talk to your family all year. You give a shit about what trainers you wear to work, all the material shit, but you don't really pay much attention to the person you love who walks out the door, and it means fuck all really without that one person."
