Motown-producer, componist en tekstschrijver Norman Whitfield is op 68-jarige leeftijd op 16 september jl. overleden aan de gevolgen van diabetes. Op zijn 19e begon hij bij het legendarische muzieklabel Motown en stond samen met Barry Gordy aan de wieg van de Motown-sound, en werkte samen met tekstschrijver Barrett Strong, in 2004 werd Norman ook toegevoegd aan the Songwriter's Hall of Fame. De Motown-sound was het kenmerkende soulgeluid van de artiesten die er onder contract stonden zoals Supremes, Four Tops, Temptations, Undisputed Truth, Marvin Gaye, Rare Earth.
Whitfield schreef en produceerde onder meer "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" voor Gladys Knight and The Pips in 1967. Door Marvin Gaye in 1969 tot een nog grotere hit gemaakt. En enkele jaren later in 1971 ook nog eens door Creedence Clearwater Revival. In 1972 won Norman Whitfield een Grammy Award voor het nummer "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" dat door de uitvoering van The Temptations tot een klassieker werd gemaakt. In 1977 kreeg hij nog een Grammy voor het nummer "Car Wash" van Rose Royce.
