Marina & The Diamonds, geboren als de Grieks/Engelse Marina Diamandis, is trots dat op 19 maart haar debuutalbum in Nederland uitkomt, genaamd ‘The Family Jewels’. Ze werd begin dit jaar als tweede genoemd in de ‘BBC sound of 2010’ waar voorgaande jaren onder andere Mika, Adele en Lady Gaga in werden getipt voordat zij doorbraken bij het grote publiek.
De 24-jarige Marina timmert in eigen land al enige tijd aan de weg; zo bracht ze in 2009 als voorloper van haar debuutalbum al een aantal succesvolle EP’s en singles uit en stond ze bijna op elk festival in de UK. Nederland heeft vorige maand tijdens Eurosonic/Noorderslag even kennis met haar mogen maken en in mei van vorig jaar stond ze op London Calling in Paradiso, Amsterdam.
De eerste single van ‘The Family Jewels’ is ‘Hollywood’.

Marina is opgegroeid in Wales, Londen en Griekenland en heeft nauwelijks muzikale scholing totdat ze zichzelf piano leerde spelen vijf jaar geleden.
"I never even really knew what a chorus was until I went into the studio with a producer," zegt ze, "I would just create a lift in mood when the time felt right or the story had been told"..., My writing had all been either instinctual or accidental up until then." Een opmerkelijk verhaal van een opmerkelijk meisje dat in thuisland UK inmiddels al is uitgegroeid tot een evenzo opmerkelijk artiest.
